原文来自 Richard Dawkins 的 The Blind Watchmaker 1996 年再版序。王道还是台湾译本《盲眼鐘錶匠》的译者。
Case 1:
原文（Richard Dawkins）：
To say that I do not apologise for this Darwinian continuity would be an understatement. Darwinism is a giant subject, whose many faces are good for more books than could be finished in a full and satisfying career. Nor am I a professional ‘science writer’ who, having ‘done’ evolution, might be expected to turn his attention to physics or astronomy.
译文（王道还译）：
我说过，我继续写作达尔文演化论，并不需要驰辩，可是这么说未免矫情。达尔文演化论是个巨大的主题，它有许多面相，值得用更多书论述，花上一辈子写，即使自觉圆满如意，都写不完。我也不是一个职业“科学作家”，“写完”演化论后，可能转向物理或天文学。
思考：
1. 翻译三个字，「信、达、雅」。「雅」比较难达到，但起码要做到「信」和「达」：不增、不减作者的意思；句子表达通顺。
2. 关注英文中的连接词。好的文章的文脉是连续的，不会突然跳来跳去，文章、段落、句子之间是有联系的，不会突然断开，如果发现无法理解，或者突然讲一个毫不相干的事物，就要考虑是不是理解错了。英文中，代词是联系上下文很重要的一个提示词。例如，原文中，「this Darwinian continuity」中的「this」就提示「Darwinian continuity」具体指的是上段中提到了两本连续写的关于达尔文进化论的书。
3. 「Nor am I a professional ‘science writer’ who, having ‘done’ evolution, might be expected to turn his attention to physics or astronomy.」中定语从句修饰的是「I」。
Case 2:
原文（Richard Dawkins）：
It provides the only satisfying explanation for why we all exist, why we are the way that we are.
译文（王道还译）：
为什么我们会存在？为什么我们是这副德行？达尔文演化论提供了唯一令人满意的解释。
译文（拙译）：
它是唯一一个能完美解释为何我们存在、我们为什么是现在这个样子的理论。
思考：
英文结构紧凑，中文结构松散。英译中时，中文结构不能和英文亦步亦趋，要灵活拆分句子。
Case 3:
原文（Richard Dawkins）：
It is the bedrock on which rest all the disciplines known as the humanities. I do not mean that history, literary criticism, and the law should be recast in a specifically Darwinian mould. Far from it, very far. But all human works are the products of brains, brains are evolved data processing devices, and we shall misunderstand their works if we forget this fundamental fact. If more doctors understood Darwinism, humanity would not now be facing a crisis of antibiotic resistance.
译文（王道还译）：
它是一切人文学科的基础。我的意思并不是：历史、文学批评、法律都必须以达尔文演化论重新塑造。我并无此意。但是所有人文创制都是脑子的产物，而脑子是演化而来的信息处理器，要是我们忘了这一基本事实，就会误解脑子的产物。要是更多医生了解达尔文演化论，人类现在就不会面对“耐抗生素”病原的威胁。
译文（拙译）：
它是所有人类文明的基石。我的意思不是，历史学、文学批评都应该按照达尔文主义的模式重新构建。达尔文主义有更深的作用。所有的人类作品都由人脑生成，人脑是进化的数据处理器官。如果我们忽视这一基本事实，我们就会误解这些人类作品。如果更多医生能理解达尔文主义，那人文科学就不会面临来自生物学抵抗的危机。
思考：
英文中有两个时常被忽略但又关乎原文意思的点：大小写和单复数。一个普通词被大写，就表明它不是一般理解的意思。英文中单数和复数形式有时不是表达一个和多个的区别，而是不同事物。例如，原文中「humanities」表示的是人文学科，相应的「human works」表示的是「人文作品」；而之后的「humanity」表示的是人类。
